Using Your DNA Results Reading your DNA results is fun and now you know your 'roots' and the homelands of your ancestors. What's next? DNA Testing can connect you with cousins you didn't know existed. Our presenter, Joy Smith, will explain how finding new cousins can break down brick walls in your research, as they may have information that you don't have. It's through a DNA connection between Joy and club member Judi Boren that we have a partnership with the ABC Family History Association in Northern Ireland! Joy Smith is the chairperson of the ABC Family History Association and runs the DNA Project for the group. She is fascinated by what we can all find out about our ancestors through DNA testing. Under her leadership, ABC has published a number of books, sharing ancestral stories. Joy and Keith live in a house built in 1837, on the borders of County Down and County Armagh in Northern Ireland. Make a Resolution to Utilize Our Local FamilySearch Center in 2025
A repository that we recommend you make time to visit this year to support your genealogical research is located right in Cranberry Township.
There is free access to technology and to a menu of library databases with assistance from volunteers at every center. Using FamilySearch.org within the FamilySearch Centers provides exclusive access to certain record collections as well as those that can be accessed from home. In addition to FamilySearch.org, there is also access to worldwide records from these databases: Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast, Geneanet, American Ancestors, Newspapers.com, and other quality options.
If visiting for the first time, ask a volunteer for a short orientation about using the resources. Then dive into the records and accomplish some research goals! There are easy ways to save records that you discover. You may download the images onto a thumb drive or e-mail the records to yourself. There is also the option to print the record images there at the FamilySearch Center.
Seeing a familiar face might be important to you when you visit the center. Members of the Cranberry Genealogy Club who volunteer there on upcoming Wednesdays are: Gloria Mason (Feb. 12, Feb. 26 mornings); Toni von Rintelen (Feb. 12 evening); Harry Kararassos (Jan 29, Feb. 19, March 19 evenings); Debbie Billeter (Feb. 5 afternoon); Judi Boren (Feb. 5 evening); Pat Purifoy (March 5 afternoon).
If you are interested in serving as an occasional volunteer at the Cranberry FamilySearch Center, your help would be welcome! Stop by on a Wednesday and offer your help for future sessions.
