Stories from Ellis Island Ellis Island opened on January 1, 1892, as the nation's first federal immigration entry point. During the next 32 years, it was by far the busiest U.S. inspection station, processing 12.5 million people, each hoping for a chance at a new life. It is estimated that 40% of all Americans can trace their roots back to immigrants who came through Ellis Island. Do you have relatives who came through Ellis Island? Did the inspectors detain them? Were they treated at the island's hospitals? Did your family names get changed by the inspectors? Our presenter, Fred Voss is a professional genealogist and a volunteer tour guide/docent at Ellis Island National Park. He will give an illustrated talk about the past, present, and future of this iconic landmark as well as sharing some of his favorite immigration stories. Using Your DNA Results Reading your DNA results is fun and now you know your 'roots' and the homelands of your ancestors. What's next? DNA Testing can connect you with cousins you didn't know existed. Our presenter, Joy Smith, will explain how finding new cousins can break down brick walls in your research, as they may have information that you don't have. It's through a DNA connection between Joy and club member Judi Boren that we have a partnership with the ABC Family History Association in Northern Ireland! Joy Smith is the chairperson of the ABC Family History Association and runs the DNA Project for the group. She is fascinated by what we can all find out about our ancestors through DNA testing. Under her leadership, ABC has published a number of books, sharing ancestral stories. Joy and Keith live in a house built in 1837, on the borders of County Down and County Armagh in Northern Ireland. Partners Across the Pond
We are so proud of our international partnership with the ABC Family History Association! Each group has a club membership to the other's organization. Plans for how we collaborate are in the planning stages with ideas including setting up one-on-one consultations, sharing publications and event announcements, and learning together. As members get to know each other - keeping in mind the time difference of course - then we can brainstorm additional ways to collaborate with fellow genealogists in Northern Ireland.
To get acquainted with the ABC Family History Association, based in Northern Ireland, first explore their robust website. An obvious advantage for our members from this partnership with ABC Family History Association is to learn about Northern Ireland's history, view photos, and find out what records might be accessible for genealogists. Take time to review the "Projects" link from the main menu of the ABC FHA website. The menu of group and individual projects is quite inspiring! Perhaps our membership can use these projects to springboard into one of our own. If you are interested in joining ABC Family History, we recommend their "Online Membership".

Greetings from ABC Chairperson, Joy Smith: "As Chairperson of ABC Family History Association in Northern Ireland, I'm delighted that our two organisations are taking forward this informal partnership which will benefit all of us. So many of our members have ancestors who emigrated to Pennsylvania and other parts of the United States and I'm sure that many of you have ancestors from the 6 counties of Northern Ireland - Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone - or from the 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland. We will be pleased to give advice and support to you in your family history research and hope that you will be able to enjoy taking part in joint projects and other events. We look forward to engaging with you over the coming years."
