Club member Matt Barry shared a free, virtual talk about AI (artificial intelligence) relating to genealogy on Saturday, September 23, 2023. We were pleased to share this program with our ABC partners in Northern Ireland.

Barry's presentation, "Journey through the Generators" provides background about AI and its implications for genealogical use.  Matt Barry not only has experience using AI technology but also has a specific interest in its application with genealogical research.  He presents scholarly information in an understandable manner while including examples of practical applications for our use as researchers.

Matt Barry, PhD has multiple degrees relating to engineering and software and is clever in creating algorithms related to genealogy research, DNA, and now AI.  He generously shares and explains his projects to aid in educating genealogists.

Genealogical podcaster Lisa Louise Cook, found online at https://lisalouisecooke.com, has produced episodes about Genealogy and AI for a few years. Search her episode guides for “AI” to find a recording. Another website to explore is AI Genealogy Insights . This genealogical topic is one to begin to understand as it is rapidly expanding applications and changing research.

Whether you think artificial intelligence will save the world or end it, you have Geoffrey Hinton to thank. Hinton has been called "the Godfather of AI," a British computer scientist whose controversial ideas helped make advanced artificial intelligence possible and, so, changed the world. Hinton believes that AI will do enormous good but, he has a warning. He says that AI systems may be more intelligent than we know and there's a chance the machines could take over.
